Question
i just bought a brand new ruger p95 from my brother in-law in Cleveland Ohio. i just wanted to know how can i re-register it in my name so that if anything were to happen it would not come back to him. i printed out and filled out two copys of the firearms bill of sales form, one for him and one me but it still it can come back registered to him right.
Answer
Roberto,
There is no handgun or rifle registration in Ohio. When you say that it can 'come back registered to him', you must be referring to the BATF Form 4473 that he filled out when he bought the gun originally. That forms is NOT a registration of the gun, but rather a record of the transfer that is retained by the firearms dealer. There is no registration database or anything of the sort.
The bill of sale that you have complete will provide your brother-in-law with all the documentation that he needs should he ever be contacted by law enforcement regarding his prior ownership of the handgun.
Sounds to me like you guys are all set and don't need to do anything else.
Regards,
Doug
