Answer
Hello Don. You have a Savage Model 1908 .22 caliber pump rifle. Savage manufactured a model 1903, a 1905 and your 1908 model in a pump rifle. The number 146881 could be a serial number, but most likely it is just a part number. Savage, Stevens and Springfield are possibly the hardest firearms to put a date on. There is, however, an individual taking care of recording and dating these old rifles. I cannot recall his name, but if you do a little research you can find it. I believe he charges $$ for his information. You also ask about a value. I have not seen one posted for sale in my career as of this date, but I did see a picture of one while doing research on your firearm. The unique feature of a removable ammo clip leads me to an informal appraisal of $200.00-$300.00.It is a very curious looking device. It has really made me sit up and pay attention to the fact that I may have been missing out on many a unique firearm over the years. I hope this information has helped answer your two questions. Thank you for asking. Charles Gage
