Question
Hi Sid, I live inside the city limits of Mansfield, Ohio. My dad bought my 16 year old son a 22 Rifle and a 410. I have trigger locks for them and they will be in a gun cabinet in his room. I will be the only one with keys to both. What do I need to do to register these guns to my son so that he can bring them home from his Grandfathers?
Answer
I'm not Sid, but I'll do my best to try to answer your question.
I will say that, not living in or doing business in Ohio, your best bet would be to check with a local gun store, but from my reading of the Ohio Constitution and code, as long as your dad lives in Ohio, a transfer is effected by your dad giving them to his grandson.
Only in tyrannies are guns registered. They are not in free countries, and thus most states of the U.S. which still recognize the U.S. Constitution not only have no registration, but specifically make registration or record keeping by a government agency illegal.
Scott Kappas ranks Ohio at a 63% for firearms liberty, and the Ohio code reads,
"The individual right to keep and bear arms, being a fundamental individual right that predates the United States Constitution and Ohio Constitution, and being a constitutionally protected right in every part of Ohio, the general assembly finds the need to provide uniform laws throughout the state regulating the ownership, possession, purchase, other acquisition, transport, storage, carrying, sale, or other transfer of firearms, their components, and their ammunition. Except as specifically provided by the United States Constitution, Ohio Constitution, state law, or federal law, a person, without further license, permission, restriction, delay, or process, may own, possess, purchase, sell, transfer, transport, store, or keep any firearm, part of a firearm, its components, and its ammunition." Check to be sure, but as long as your dad lives in Ohio, a transfer goes like this: "Here you go, son, be careful with them."
