Question
I have a Browning Sweet Sixteen. (Left to me by an old family friend). The serial number on the bottom of the receiver where the rounds are chambered is 76998. Sweet Sixteen is engraved on the side and the trigger looks gold or plated. Can you tell me the date of manufacturer and any other historical info or where to look? thanks
Carl
Answer
Hello Carl. The manufacture of the A-5 began in 1903.The first 10,000 produced by F.N. shipped to the U.S. were ordered by John M. Browning. They were marked BROWNING AUTOMATIC ARMS CO. OGDEN UTAH-U.S.A.. Very few serial number records remain of these, though they did begin with serial number 1 to approximately 228,000. Exact production figures are not available, so this leaves the year of manufacture on Pre-World WarII A-5's strictly a guess. From 1940 to 1946, manufacture of the A-5 was turned over to Remington. The next six years the manufacture, ?. But in 1952, F.N. took over production again. This information came from Browning's web site.
Your Sweet Sixteen serial number 76998 was manufactured for Browning by F.N. between 1903 and 1939. As far as the gold trigger,I have not found any information. I hope this help's answer your question and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
