Question
Another question about an old gun! I have a J. Stevens Arms Co. Model 238A proof tested 20Ga. I don't see a serial # This was my grandmothers dove hunting gun. It is in great condition, I have the box magazine too. I have done a little research and think it was manufactured between 1920 and 1948. I came across your answer page and thought you could shed some light. Most people I show it to have never seen a bolt action shotgun.
Answer
Hello Brian. Yes, your shotgun is a BOLT-ACTION! I am amazed at the number of individuals who are not aware of a shotgun being manufactured in anything other than a double-barrel. Television, or should I say movies, has compounded the problem. It was manufactured in the 40's and at that time were very impressive pieces, especially the ones with a 'removable clip'. Wow! Your grandmother was in good company at that time. Alas, since then the bolt-action shotgun has taken a baaack seat to almost anything else made today. Hang on to it! Never know, she may want it back someday! Please pardon the levity, but I own a Mauser 98 GEHA in 12 gauge! It is inevitable that when I show it, the first question is "DID YOU BUILD IT YOURSELF". Wish I had. I didn't really answer anything for you that you didn't already know, but I do thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
