Question
QUESTION:
I have a bolt action rifle with peep sights.  No mfg name.  On barrel behind front sight is a symbol like a bursting bomb, RIA, and the numbers 8-18.  The rifle has a full length stock, 5 round load.  Remove the stock and the numbers C119 are visible on the underside of the barrel. That's the closest thing to a serial number on the rifle.  I got this rifle from an uncle about 40 years ago.  Not sure what the original breach was, but it is now bored for a savage 300 round.  Would like to know who the mfg was and about how old it is.

ANSWER: Hello Harry.I need a picture to I.D. it for you.Charles Gage

Answer
Hello Harry. Your rifle was originally manufactured at the Rock Island Arsenal(RIA) in August 1918(8-18). It was a Springfield Model 1903 which was chambered for .30-03cal. The Model 1906 was a conversion from .30-03 (which used a round nose bullet) to the caliber we know best today as the .30-06(which was equipt with a spire-point bullet in a lesser weight but greater velocity).GUN SMITH ALERT!!! Your rifle still has the original factory barrel, so I am not sure why someone would re-chamber it to a .300 Savage. I suggest you take it to a reputable licensed gun smith and have the chamber checked before buying ammo or firing it. I hope this answers your question and thank you for asking for me.Charles Gage
