QuestionAbout 15 years ago, while living in northern Minnesota, I acquired what I believe to be a new Medallion action. It doesn't appear to ever have had a barrel attached It has the characteristic Browning flat ejector on the left side of the action, action is engraved, open style gold trigger assembly, and gold enlayed hinged trigger guard. However, the serial number is strange. A70L10XX I can find no reference to an action only. Is this truely a browning Medallion of did FN make something "special" imitating the Browning. I am preparing to take some items to a gun show and would appreciate any insights you may have.
Thank
AnswerWithout seeing what you have it is difficult to say for sure. The serial number is similar to a 1970 rifle. It is difficult to determine if it is a Safari, Medallion or Olympian Grade by the serial number as in 1968 the gun laws changed and Browning changed the serial number lettering code on the larger calibers. Before the Safari was "L", Medallion "X" and Olympian "P" after 68 they all went to "L". The A before is odd. I have seen a few in the larger caliber rifles with "A" and have been told that this was a rifle that was put together at the Arnold, Missouri Browning facility. Thus they stamped an "A" in front or end of the serial number. I can't say this is fact, but it makes sense.
