Question
I have a Browning look alike 22,I bought a good while back..My question,, Does interarms still import? And if not. when did they stop? and why did they stop?
Answer
Bob,
Interarms was the US company for International Arms Company based in Monaco and owned by Samuel Cummings. Cummings was known as a 'pleasant and law abiding merchant of death'. He would buy up surplus arms production from governments and resell them to other countries or governments. At one point, he was actually selling arms to participants on both sides of a Central American war.
Interarms was the US importation and distribution arm. They brought in thousands of Walthers, Mausers, CZs and dozens of other brands. At one point Cummings said that they had enough armament to 'overwhelm' the US military.
In 1998 Cummings died at the age of 91. His wife and two daughters were not interested in continuing the business so they closed it down. Considering the fact that Interarms made around $100 million a year for close to 4 decades, they probably didn't need the money.
It was a pretty cool place. I lived literally across the street from their Alexandria, Virginia location from 1978-1980. Probably should have gone to work for them...
That's the story...hope it helps you out.
Regards,
Doug
