Question
Crescent rifle
Identifying this rifle is driving me nuts, can you make one more attempt. It clearly says "New York Club pat Apr 14 1891 the H&D Folsom Arms Company NY USA' and Crescent Arms Co Norwich Conn Manufacturers" Note the picture of the lever and bolt, what is the function or use of it? I can't figure it out. Also it is not a lever action but a single shot, note the trigger and two hammers. Please this is going to drive me wacky. I cannot find any info on it anyplace. Thanks again, Rick.
AnswerHello Rick. I have not been able to find this rifle manufactured by H&D Folsom/Crescent. I did, however, find information on the First Rolling Block in the small caliber and frame. It is the Remington No.4. Remington began production on this rifle in 1890 with the .22cal and .32 cal rimfire. In 1898 they produced one in another caliber, .25-10 Stevens rimfire. These had a screw in barrel. In 1902 Remington began the option of a take-down model which allowed the barrel to be removed by a twist of the lever on the right-side of the frame. In August 1924 the octagon barrel was discontinued. An off-shute of the Boys Scout of America ordered this version from Remington after having received offerings from, among other gun manufacturers,J.Stevens Tool & Arms. This shows other brands(F&D Folsum/Crescent) could have manufactured a similar rifle. So your's very well could follow the same early date of manufacture.Possible manufacture of your rifle; 1902-1924.GUN SMITH ALERT!! You you say you are not sure if your rifle is a .22caliber. I suggest taking it to a competent licensed gun smith to find out the caliber(possibly .25-10 caliber rimfire).I hope this answers your question and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
