Legal Age to Carry Gun in Louisiana

Question
QUESTION: Hi Doug, I am 20 yrs old and own a handgun, but i was wondering what the legal age to carry is exposed is in louisiana. also, can someone under 20 become a officer and stuff. thanks.
ANSWER: Justin,
Louisiana allows you to carry a firearm openly while you are on foot, anywhere it is legal for you to have a firearm. The gun must be worn in a visible belt holster and it must be clearly visible that you are in possession of a firearm. You can get a concealed weapons permit after you turn 21.
As far as becoming a police officer, you should probably check with the specific agency that you are interested in joining. Some agencies accept applicants 18 years old and older, others require that you are 21 years old.
Good luck and thanks for visiting our site...

QUESTION: Another Question, im not sure how to exactly word it, but if i start carrying it exposed, i know it will draw attention, and if somenone worrys enough, possibly call the police. I guess what im trying to ask is do you think it will be a problem for me to carry it in public like walmart or a store, of does it not attract as much attention as i think it will. Thanks.
Answer
Justin,
It depends on where exactly in Louisiana you are. If you are in a rural area, it probably won't attract all that much attention. I you live in a urbanized area like New Orleans, it could be a little different. I don't know how many people typically carry openly there.
Here in Arizona open carry was not very unusual 10 years ago. Now it is much less typical.
Unfortunately, open carry has disadvantages. People know you are armed and as a result are much more aware of your presence. Bad guys will take note as well. Personally I prefer concealed carry for that reason.
Just keep it legal and low key. You will probably be just time.

Doug
