hi iv got a marlin shotgun model #17-G that has marlin fire arms co. Newhaven CT U.S.A. pat dates April 2 1889, Sept 11 1894, Nov 6 1894, Nov 27 1900, Nov 29 1904. stamped into the barrel of this 12 G shotgun, iv also got what iv seemed to believe to be a serial number right where you would load the 5 shots, it is A17668. with this information would you be able to tell me how old this rifle may be and any information on this rifle would be much appreciated

Hello Westley. Your Model 17 was made during WW1. The "A" prefix was applied to these. GUN SMITH ALERT!! As to shooting your Model 17, be advised that Marlin has issued a service bulletin advising owners not to shoot them. If the gun does not lock up properly the breach bolt can be released from the action (think about where your head is when in the firing position). Have a qualified gun smith check this gun for you before you try to shoot it. If it checks out OK, shoot only light loads or blackpowder loads in it.
