Revolver handgun for trapping use

Question
"I would like to buy my son a revolver for trapping. He is 24 yrs old and has rifles, but would like a revolver to carry with him while he is trapping. I don't know a lot of info on guns, don't know what I should look for, and don't know what caliber pistol would be the one to look for. He needs something larger than a 22, in order that he can kill a fox, badger, coon, or coyote if he needs to. I would like to spend only around 200 or less if that is possible."
Answer
Kristi,
It is probably going to be tough to find a decent revolver in a proper caliber for a hunting / trapping sidearm for $200. Realistically you are probably looking at twice that unless you can find something used.
In terms of caliber, .357 magnum would probably be the minimum I'd recommend. I'd also suggest a heavier gun with a longer barrel, probably a 4 inch minimum barrel length, 6 inches would probably be better.
Some good brands to look for would be Ruger, Smith & Wesson and Taurus. There are several models from each manufacturer that would fit the bill.
You might try looking online at www.gunbroker.com for some used guns. You can occasionally find a deal there.
Best regards,
Doug
