Colt .38 Police Special S/N 429915

Hi,

I recently inherited a Colt .38 Police Special S/N 429915 in reasonable shape.  I'm curious to know what year it was manufactured, and whether it would be considered a Curio/Relic as defined by the ATF.  Also curious to know what it might be worth, but don't plan on selling it.

Hello Kent. Although I wasn't able to find a Colt revolver with "COLT 38 POLICE SPECIAL" stamped on the barrel, (perhaps this was an oversight) I was able to track the serial number to the Colt model POLICE POSITIVE SPECIAL 38 caliber. This Colt model was the Second Issue with the patent date of 1926 on the barrel. It was last manufactured in 1978. Your revolver with serial number 429915 was manufactured in 1934. It will either have smooth wood grips(early model) or checkered wooden grips(later production). It is over 50 years old, which it would be considered a Curio/Relic firearm. To purchase a C/R firearm it must be logged into the license holders record book. The value of any firearm is relative. Since I cannot handle your revolver to determine this, I will go on your approximation of "reasonable shape" and call it 50% which would bring an estimated value of from $250 - $300.
