Marlin Model 3040

Question
This 30-30 was marketed by J C Penney. Serial #26017465. Would like your thoughts on this gun. Is it a 1974 manufacture? The forearm and stock are like new. Some rust on the barrel and outside of the chamber, but none inside. Which Marlin sold model does it match? I am guessing it might be worth $150 since not a collector piece? Thanks
Answer
Lanny,
The JC Penney 3040 is actually a Marlin 336. There were literally 22 different version of the rifle made by Marlin. The one you have is most likely the standard version. The standard 336A was first made from 1948-1962. They were reintroduced from 1973 to 1980. They are not really collectable, but according to my books, they are worth about $250 in 'very good' condition and $175 in 'good' condition. If you have some rust, you are probably looking at less than good condition.
As far as the serial number, the lookup on the Marlin website confirms that the date of manufacture was 1974.
Hope this helps you out.
