Answer
Hello Mark. Your Mauser is an 1895 Chilean Mauser manufactured in Berlin in caliber 7MM (7X57 Mauser). It was part of a shipment that had been sent to South Africa, between the Boar War and WWI, that was successfully turned back by a British blockade. The shipment returned to the factory in Berlin and was re-stamped for their Chilean allies. It was here they received the Chilean Crest on the receiver and the stock and sent to Chile. The Model 1895's were used by the Mexicans in the Mexican-American War. The Chilean Model 1895's firepower was so superior to the American's .30-40 Krag and the Springfield .45-70 that, although surprised by the Americans, a Mexican Army unit of 700 soldiers repelled about 1,500 American soldiers killing over 1,400! This caused the American Military to build a similar rifle, the 1903 Springfield rifle in .30-06. The irony was that the American's had to pay the German's for the use of the Mauser design in all the 1903 Springfield rifles! GUN SMITH ALERT!! Make sure that a competent licensed gunsmith checks your rifle especially to determine the caliber,as some were rechambered to .308 NATO (NOT .308Win.) in the 1960's. Your rifle was well manufactured, and there is a collector following for certain models. I'm not sure what your question is, but I hope this information adds to your knowledge of the rifle. Thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
