Question
I inherited a 16 guage Lefever Nitro Special double barrel shotgun from my father several years ago. It is in very good condition and has the serial number 180312. Could you please tell me what year it was manufactured and what a fair asking price would be if I should decide to sell it? Your assistance is truly appreciated!
Answer
Hello Charles. Your Lefever, serial #180312, was produced by the Ithaca Gun Company between 1923 and 1924. Ithaca made the Lefever after acquiring the company around 1916. Ithaca began the manufacture of the Lefever Nitro Special in 1921 and continued through 1948. You ask what a fair price would be. I say what ever someone is willing to pay. There is a collectors market for these guns, although not at the prices of the pre-Ithaca models. The condition of your Lefever is subject to comparison with NRA guidelines. You say it is in very good condition, which without inspecting it thoroughly, I cannot give you a positive value. I can tell you that it most likely would be between $200 and $500. There is also an addition of about 20% for being a 16 gauge. I hope this information has answered your questions and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
