Question
I have a chance to buy a Westernfield model 176 20ga.shotgun.fired less then 100 times. Can you tell me when and who made this gun? And approx value? It does have bolt action and I think 5 shot magazine. Thanks, Brian.
Answer
Hello Brian. The Westernfield model 176 was manufactured by Marlin Firearms Company for Montgomery Ward. The Marlin Model 55 was a bolt action with a 2-shot magazine. The Model 55 was produced in a variety of designs(some with barrels as long as 36", while others had adjustable chokes). Marlin manufactured the Model 55 from 1950-1965. The 20 gauge was manufactured from 1956-1964. The Westernfield model was made with less expensive wood stocks and may have lacked some of the features of the Marlin. Although this is a very good quality shotgun, the value is very low. Since there is no collectability to it, it is priced as a shooter. For one in very good condition a price of $100 would be average. "GUNSMITH ALERT" Since the gun is almost 50 years old, I suggest you have it checked by a competent licensed gunsmith before shooting it. I hope this answers your question and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
