Question
I have a P38 Mod HP left side of slide: Walther(in banner), Waffenfabrik Walther,Zella-Mehlis(Thur)Walthers patent Cal. 9m/m.
Left side of slide: stamped with eagle standing on an "n" ((very small) bbl with same eagle, blued 99%, excellent condition, sn 103xx (5 digits) with black holster embossed on back w/P38 and Eagle standing on circled swastika with WaA86 under the circle. This was "liberated" in 1945 from a German officer by my friend who is now 87. Any ideas on its worth?
Answer
Hello Butch. It has taken Five hours to track your pistol. If you had provided the complete serial number it would have taken me less than a couple. Most people are paranoid about showing the complete serial number, but there is no danger in doing so. Your pistol is an early WWII made in the Zella-Mehlis Factory between 1939-1943. The "HP" stands for Heeres Pistole Standard production. High gloss blue is earlier than rough type bluing. Blue Book of Gun Values by Fjestad shows a value of 60% $500 to 100% $1,850. I highly recommend you have it evaluated by a professional. The P-38's are easily faked. I hope this answers your question and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
