Question
I have an old Winchester rifle and trying to identify it and see what it is and what it is worth. It is not in good shape but I can read some of the stamp on the barrel.
It says Winchester new Haven Ct 1st line and the second line says "Kings improvement Patented March (cant read after) then says October 16 1860. The serial number on the stock says 145913A. It is a round barrel not octogon. please help.
Thanks
Answer
Hi,
Even in poor condition pre 1900 Winchesters can be quite valuable.
Exact model, caliber, and condition will determine its value.
Round barrel means its likily a carbine model.
If it has a yellow or brass looking reciever its a model 1866.

Value runs $2500.00 in poor condition to $30,000.00 in great shape
If its a steel reciever is likily a model 1873.
http://www.winchestercollector.org/guns/1873.shtml
Value runs $500.00 in poor condition to $30,000.00 in great shape
If it belonged to anyone of note those values can skyrocket.
You can get a factory letter at Buffalo Bill Historic Center.

I would have have a local gunsmith look at it clean it up and appraise it.
