QUESTION: I have an old family rifle that belonged to my dad & grandmother. The barely readable date on the barrel is Nov. 20, 1917. The magazine says 23A Sporter. Can you tell me anything about this gun. It's a good shooter.
ANSWER: The Savage model 23a was made from 1923 to 1933.
It was designed for easy single shot loading.
Its worth $100 to $250 depending on condition.

It critial feature was easy single loading ability.
Basically it is good for instructing new shooters safely.
Boy Scout troops often bought these rifles.
They were first rifles for many young shooters.
They are real tac drivers.
Once you knew what you doing you could use the magazine.
