Question
I purchased a used Stevens model 87A .22 calibur short, long, long rifle autoloading about 1973. the numbers on it are:
2094577 patents 224758
2223093 re 22585 2271576
That is the way they are arranged on the rifle. I could not find any number that is listed as serial #. Approximate date will be OK if actual date cannot be determined. Thank you. Norm
Answer
Hello Norm. Generally, serial numbers were not used on mass production firearms until the GCA 1968. Your Stevens Model 87A was manufactured between 1942 and 1945. The first patent date you gave was for the first year of production 1938. Between the first patent and the last, there were over 200,000 Model 87's manufactured. The patent number 2271576 was applied for by Frederic S. Wilcox on Feb.3rd,1942 for a feed mechanism for a repeating firearm. Savage bought it up and used it in their Savage Arms/Stevens Model 87A. Good little gun. I hope this answers your question and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
