Question
I have arthritis in my shooting hand. How can I tell how much "kick" different shells have? On the boxes they list different grs. Does this have any effect? I have a Ruger SP101 38 revolver. A new gun is out of the question. What shells would you suggest?
Answer
Grs = grains which is a weight measurement of the bullet (not the shell or powder). Most .38 are 158 grn, you can get lighter weight bulltes and they will kick less, but do not have the impact or knock down power of a bigger bullet. The more weight you are pushing out the more that impacts your target. A 9mm bullet is normally about 115 grains, less weight so less kick. A .22 is very small and almost no kick. Another factor is how heavy or big is gun. The bigger the gun or the more it weighs means it will absorb some of the shock and will not transfer as much kick from the gun. If you fired a large rifle round from a pistol it would rip your head off from the recoil that the large rifle and your shoulder would normally take.
Velocity is another factor on kick or recoil. The faster the bullet the more energy it takes to push the bullet out so the more recoil it will have.
So not sure if that answers your question, if not feel free to write back.
