Question
Doug,
I am 20 and I live in Louisiana. I was wondering if you knew the process for my friend to give me one of his handguns and if so could you explain it to me
Answer
Daniel,
In Louisiana, you can legally own a handgun at age 18. You can only acquire the gun through a private party transfer since Federal law prohibits you from purchasing a firearm from a federally licensed dealer until you are 21 years old.
If you are legally permitted to own a firearm (you are not a prohibited possessor), then you can privately transfer a firearm in a face to face transaction between two Louisiana residents. Louisiana does not have any registration requirement. I would strongly recommend that you make a record of the transfer in the form of a bill of sale so that you both have a record that the firearm has changed hands.
That's about it...
Hope this helps...
