Question
I grew up in the Rhodesian bush . My old man had a springfield sporting rifle he loved dearly ,that unfortunately disappeared during the upheavals that were to follow in the 60's. It had a powerful kick and massive stopping power. I cannot remember it's calibre .Can you take a stab at what it might have been?
Yours sincerely

Answer
If you mean a US Rifle M1903 that been sporterized then it was 30-06 Springfield.

The other possibility is "Trap Door Springfield"
Those were 45-70 Government.

If it wasn't one of these,
Springfield Arms Co was a trade name used by Savage Stevens in the 1930 & 40s.
