Question
I have a.22 pump Stevens visible loader. Serial number 307555.
The rifle has on the trigger guard. Remington UMC
Trademark.
Else where on the rifle it has: J Stevens Arm Co; and on the barrel: 22 short long or long rifle.
What info can you give me?
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Answer
Jack,
Not sure what else you are looking for. These are pretty interesting old guns. It has a pretty unusual design which has given it a decent value. In good condition, it might be worth between $300-$400. In fair condition, probably only about $250-$300.
What ever you do, DO NOT try and take it apart. These guns are difficult for a trained gunsmith to reassemble. For an untrained person, it would be almost impossible. Parts are pretty tough to come by, so I'm not sure I'd shoot it a whole bunch, although a standard .22 LR cartridge should be just fine to shoot as long as the action is in proper working order.
These guns were first made in 1907 and were continued in a couple of different variations until 1934. If it just says "visible loader" and does not reference a No. 71 or No. 70, it was made prior to 1931. There were a total of around 100,000 of them made. Since the serial number is not unique to the model that doesn't tell us much. Most of these guns are pretty old so if you decide to shoot it I would make sure of a couple of things.
1. Dry check the lock-up to ensure it's tight and a good pull back will NOT open it.
2. Check the chamber face for firing pin deformation.
3. Check the chamber for cracks and wear.
4. Give it the old bullet in the muzzle test to see if the barrel / rifling is worn
5. If you decide to shoot it, use standard velocity ammo only and be sure you wear shooting glasses, not just eye glasses.
Hope this helps you out...
