Colt .45 New Service Revolver

2016/7/22 9:09:05

Question
What is my next step?  Last December 2008, I inherited a Colt .45 New Service Revolver Serial Number 4714 from my mother in Florida. Manufacturing Information: Colt Patent Firearm Manufacturing Co. Hartford CT USA PAT AUG51884JUN51990. (Taken from weapon).  Condition of weapon is serviceable.  Cylinder rotates smoothly, trigger pulls effortlessly, and hammer falls crisp.  Overall impression: put a bullet in the chamber; it will fire.  There is surface rust, and some discoloration.  My mother says the last time the gun was fired was around 1950 when my grandmother shot at a fox raiding the chicken coup. When I got the revolver back home (Phoenix AZ) I put gun oil on it wrapped it in cloth and pretty much forgot about it. Today, I read an article in Gun and Ammo on a similar weapon which got me interested in finding out more about the gun. I spent a few hours on the Internet trying to find information about the weapon.  Last thing is to ask the experts.  So, what should I do next?

Answer
I am more a colt 45 auto guy.  I would use some 0000 steel wool, with oil to softly remove the rust.  Then I would contact Colt on their web site and they have a contact us tab, request info from them.  There is a manual available on line for most firearms.  I have attached a couple of links that may help.
