Question
I have inherited the above rifle from an old friend and he was very humble about it's history when I did ask him about it many years ago. (He as in his "80's" then.) After he passed away I learned from his wife that the gun was used by his mother who was a "trick-shot" artist in a circus.  I think it is a model 414 and is in very good condition although not restored. Is this a "rare" gun? Where can I find out more information? Any help would be appreciated.    Thank you, Mike

Answer
Michael,

The Model 414 is not an extremely 'rare' gun, but it is an interesting firearm.  They were manufactured between 1912 and 1932.  Typically, these were built on the Stevens No. 44 action.  There was generally a 'rocky mountain' sight on the front and a Lyman aperture sight on the rear.  It should have a 26" barrel and a straight grip walnut stock.

If the action locks up pretty tight, if the bore and finish are still in good shape, and if the stock only shows normal wear (no chips or dings), it could be worth between $300 and $350 dollars.  Many auction sites and sellers are asking a considerable premium over this with asking prices of $1000 or more.  I don't see any selling at that price though.

Hope this helps you out a bit...

Doug
