unfortunately everything is in my girlfriends name.
is it illegal for a friend who is a citizen to buy the shotgun from a store, shoot it a few times, tire of it and then sell it to me as a private deal ? i dont want to break any laws,i would like to hear your opinion.
Answer
Roger,
As a resident alien, you need to provide proof of residence before you can purchase a firearm. I think it would be a good idea for you to get a bill or two that shows you are a resident. You might want to get your name put on the phone bill or the water or electric bill just to get yourself established.
As far as the other method you suggest, it would appear to me that it would be an transparent attempt to circumvent the law as you describe it. The person purchasing the firearm should be the primary buyer. If the firearms dealer even got a hint that you were considering something like that, they would not sell the firearm since they can get into a lot of trouble with BATF.
I'd suggest that you either a) do something to establish residence which would probably be helpful in other areas as well or b) look in the newspaper classifieds for something you like or possibly visit a gun show and buy from a private party.
Hope this helps you out...
