Answer
Dave,
You have a Lee Enfield No. 4, Mk 2 rifle. Some consider this rifle to be the pinnacle of bolt action service rifle designs. Typically the marks on the gun should look something like this:
Based on the markings, your rifle was manufactured in 1955. The Mark 2 differed from the Mark 1 slightly. The main modifications were that the trigger on the Mark 2 was attached to the receiver, not the trigger guard. If you look on the gun, you can most likely determine which factory made it. Look for ROF (F) or ROF (M). The "F" would be for the Royal Ordinance Factory at Fazakerley while the "M" would indicate Maltby.
In total there were over 16 million Lee Enfields of different varieties manufactured up until they were discontinued in 1959. In terms of value, depending on the condition, you are probably looking $150 to around $500. To get to the higher end, you'd need to have a rifle in 98% condition which is very tough to find.
Not sure how much more you are looking for in the way of info...hope this helps.
