Question
Hello, I found my uncles Sterling worth fox double barrel shotgun about 20 years ago. I discovered it in my closet again and was just wondering what other info I could get on this gun. It has a number on all parts that say 365751. It says it was Sterling worth fox made in PA USA. I could not find the Guage. Some of the wood has a chip out of it. Is it worth anything? What year was it made? Thank you lots Kimberlee
Answer
Hello Kimberlee. You have a very high quality collector piece. According to the serial number 365751, your shotgun was manufactured in 1928 by the A.H. Fox Gun Company in 16 gauge. This company was located in Philadelphia,PA until 1930. In 1929, Savage Arms Company bought out the A.H. Fox Gun Company. There were several grades of the STERLINGWORTH Fox shotgun. I am going to try and list and identify the ones that have to do with the 16 gauge. Here goes:
In average condition = 60%
Standard shotgun configuration with shell extractors and double triggers: $900.00
With single trigger: $1,100.00
With auto-ejectors: $1,400.00
Deluxe model with 32 inch barrels and auto-ejectors: $1,300.00
Deluxe model with 32 inch barrels,auto-ejectors,Ivory bead sight and original recoil pad: $1,800.00.
The chip in the, depending on the size and location on the gun, will not affect these prices. When I put a value on a gun, since not being able to closely inspect it, I always start with the average condition of 60% according to the Blue Book of Gun Values by Fjestad. The collector market is made up of many individuals, institutions and organizations. Therefore, I suggest checking sights like GUNSINTERNATIONAL.com, GUNSAMERICA.com and auction sights like GUNBROKER.com and AUCTIONARMS.com. I hope this has answered your questions and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
