Question
Doug,
Thank you for you prompt reply. The only number on the yoke of the gun I asked you about today is 61132. There is no other model information indicated. It does appear to be a Model 10 to me. The first digit was hard to see and it may be a 5. Any additional information you may provide would be greatly appreciated. You have been a big help.
Answer
George,
Sounds like it was one of those guns manufactured in the period between 1946 and 1958. Based on the serial number it was made after 1948 when S&W started using a "C" prefix on their serial numbers. Prior to 1948, the prefix was an "S". The actual Model 10 did not start until 1957. Prior to that they were referred to as a "Military and Police" model which was the precursor to the Model 10. They were well made and had a 'short action' instead of the old 'long action'. They are good shooters, but again, would probably not command a price significantly in excess of the book value...
Hope this helps you out...
