Question
Yugo M70AB2
Hello, i want to get Yugo M70AB2 since i've heard many good things about it, especially the 1.5mm or 1.6mm thick receiver which is the same as RPK light machine gun from what i have heard, what i want to know is... is it any good? I have heard good and bad things about Century International Arms, Inc that assembles Yugo M70AB2 AK-47 and didn't know what to think so is there any problems or anything of that nature related with Century International Arms, Inc and/or Yugo M70AB2 assembled by them? Thanks
AnswerSorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I do not use the AKs, but a colleague does and likes them a great deal, so I sent your question to him. Here is his response:
"I would go with the Yugo (or Bulgarian or Romanian RPK) because I do think the thicker barrel and receiver make the difference in accuracy. Sitting unsupported with an RPK I was able to get the same group as an AR at 200 yards (the RPK's longer barrel may have also contributed some).
"Century rifles can be good - but they definitely have to be carefully examined before purchase. I've seen crooked front sights, gas blocks and front trunnions that were not installed correctly. Easiest way to check the front sight and gas block is to place the AK upside down (resting on the rear sight and front sight on a table) and look down the the top of the barrel (from the muzzle end) to confirm that the front sight and gas block are straight.
"For the front trunnion, examine how the receiver cover fits. You may notice that there are gaps at the front (where the cover should touch the front trunnion) or that the front of the cover was ground off to force it to fit.
"None of these issues seem to impair the function of the rifle (and a crooked front sight and gas block can be fixed) but if poor workmanship really bugs you then look out for them. (Although a crooked front sight can be very annoying because you'll have to pin the sight post all the way to one side to get to zero - a windage adjustable rear sight [PRK type] can mitigate this problem though).
"Also pick up the original Yugo mags if you can find them. They cause the bolt to stay open when empty which provides automatic feedback letting you know you're empty (unlike conventional AK mags which allow the bolt to close and let you know you're empty only after getting that "click" from pulling the trigger on an empty chamber).
