year it was made and maybe value it is in excellent shape. Thanks Steve
Answer
Steve,
I believe what you have is a Model 1892 "New Army & Navy" Colt Second Issue. It would have double cylinder notches, square cylinder release and either hard rubber or wood grips. You didn't mention the caliber or whether there were any other markings, so I cannot be absolutely certain.
Based on the serial number, the gun would have been made in 1905. This is consistent with the period of time this gun was manufactured (1892-1907).
Values are nearly impossible to determine with any accuracy without looking at the gun. The 'book value' for a gun of this type in 90% condition would be around $800. At 80% it drops to $500 and at 70% it drops to $400. These rating of condition should be made by a gun appraiser as they are based on certain grading of things like finish, wear, etc.
If you are really interested, you can have the original configuration confirmed by Colt. Send a letter with all the information you have on the gun to Colt Archive Properties, LLC
PO Box 1868
Hartford, CT 06144. The research fee is typically $100. If they can't find the info on your specific gun, they will refund $50 of the research fee.
Hope this helps you out...
