Choke for a Mossberg 410

Question
Hello,
I have a Mossberg 410 (model 183KD). Really enjoyed it until the choke tube got a split on it. 1) Is it safe to use without the choke on it?(I`ve been told by friends that it can be used but will give a very wide pattern). 2) Seeing they don`t produce this model anymore where can I find another choke? 3) Are chokes from other 183 models compatible with the kd?
Thanks for your time.
Answer
I'm not familiar with that particular model of shotgun, but
1) It should be safe enough, but as your friends have told you, the pattern will be terrible, a result of the wadding hitting the choke thread. Eventually the threads would be ruined. If you are going to use it this way, it would be far better for you to have a gunsmith cut off a inch or so of threaded end and just use it as a cylinder bore.
2) I can't imagine that Mossberg would have changed the machining patterns for the chokes, so I would think that choke tubes for another Mossberg shotgun would work, but you'd have to try to find out. If they screw in and seat, I would assume they would work fine. You MAY be able to find original choke tubes at www.e-gunparts.com
