H&R Handy Gun

2016/7/22 9:08:02

Question
Recently I inherited a H&R Handy Gun .410 that has been passed down in the family since new.  Before it was transferred to me by the estate, I knew about the AOW status and also knew it had not ever been registered.  Through careful research with the ATF and local law enforcement, I decided to take the barrel and have it rifled with a 1:30 twist .002 depth.  Now it's legal and doesn't have to be registered.  My question is have I hurt the value or helped?  Chances are I'll never part with it - as it's a family heirloom, but am curious on if it would be more desirable now that it's legal.

Thanks,

Bill

Answer
Bill,

Any time you modify one of these guys from its original condition you will reduce the value.  Part of the reason for the collect-ability of this piece is the comparative rareness of the legally registered original versions.  The value of an original condition Handy Gun can range between $400 and $600 depending on the condition.

Sorry I don't have better news for  you...

Doug
