old shotgun and steel shot

Question
I have a model 11 remington shotgun it looks pretty old! So my grandson and I cleaned it up so we can go skeet shooting! I haven't hunted for a while but I believe steel shot is used in shells now. Is this a problem for older guns or a safety issue ? I want to have a good time with him at the range not get him hurt!Appreciate any thoughts you might have! Jim
Answer
Do not use steel shot in your old gun until after you have the gun checked by a gunsmith.
But, steel shot is not normally used with skeet shooting. You normally use 7 1/2 or 8 or 9 lead shot with skeet. If the shot is ending up in a waterfowl area, then you may be required to use lead shot.
Steel shot is federally required for hunting migratory birds, and is sometimes required by the state for other hunting, according to the laws of your state.
Hope this helps!
