Question
I have been shopping I love marlins but the 39A comes apart in a way that makes me nervous , mossberg makes a new 464 in 22 what do you know about that gun , I want something all one piece and stays in one piece if there is a .22 that has the loading gate in the traditional place rather then the front loading gun I would want that if one is made
Answer
Hi,
You will not have problem with the Marlin take down system.
This arms design is oldest still in use without a stop in production.
It started in 1891. Annie Oakley used this rifle for trick shooting.
Mossberg's .22 lever is kinda like the Winchester 9422.
Its 1970s vintage design that Mossberg tweeked.
Both will serve you well.
In terms of a side of receiver loading port, that is not a good idea safety wise.
Loading port could set off the rimfire primer when it closes.
All load from the top.
The original lever gun were .44 rim fire they loaded from the top as well.
The side loading port came with center fire rounds.
