Question
Hi, I have a DWM Luger and am unsure how to date this firearm. I do know it is an American Eagle. I am also unsure whether or not it is a .30 or a 9mm as I am hesitant to fire it due to it's age. What should I look for to date this gun, and are there any external differences between the .30 and 9mm.
Thanks
Answer
Hello Sebastian,
There is no way to date the gun down to the year with guns as old as the one you have. You can narrow the gun down to a 10-15 year period starting in 1906 and ending in 1920ish range. The 9mm barrel should have a noticeably larger than the .30 caliber. There would be no external difference between the 2 calibers. I would probably refrain from firing a 100 year old gun that was designed for 100 year old ammo with any ammo that is made now. Most of the older firearms were not made to handle the "hot" loads that many ammunition companies put in each bullet case. Besides the gunis probably worth 2,000 to 5,000 dollars, one hot load that splits the barrel and you could only get 200 bucks for it.
