Question
My gun doesn't shoot a pattern anymore. It has a nickle barrel do I want to have it rifled? Best I can tell it was made in 1919.
Answer
Hello Jon. I am not a gunsmith, but I have had a similar problem with a Winchester Model 1873 in 38-40 manufactured in 1899. Could not hit a 50 gallon barrel at fifty yards. I cleaned the lead out and could see all the rifling, but it still did no good. My gunsmith cut and crowned the barrel about 1/2 inch so it would shoot straighter, but he told me the bore at the muzzle end had been shot out about an inch and a half back. He said these rifles, although capable of shooting smokeless powder, were not made to shoot modern ammunition. This burns the muzzle out. Cutting the barrel will effect the collectible price and I've not heard of a barrel being re-rifled. Take it to a couple of competent licensed gunsmiths, always good to get a second opinion. Thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
