QUESTION: It is a 32 cal. hammerless that opens from the top. When it is open, there are 2 pieces of metal that stick up leaving a slot between them. All I can make out on the butt is "pat nov 17 pats pend" The chamber can be removed when you align a slot. The owl heads are facing outward, not looking at the trigger. On the trigger guard is 16552. Under the grips is I16552 and there is a spring over metal rod.
I can't find any other markings. I hope this is enough.
Thanks so much for your help.
Jim
Answer
Hello Jimmy. There is very little information to be found on Iver Johnson revolvers. I hope this helps some. Your revolver fires a .32 cal. S&W cartridge. There are two cartridges in .32S&W. One is .32S&W and the other is a .32S&W Long. You will need a gunsmith to check for the correct length. The Safety Hammerless Revolver you have could be the Second Model manufactured between 1897 to 1908. On this one, there is a safety lever added to the face of the trigger. It could also be the Third Model, also known as the New Model and was manufactured between 1909 to 1941. There is no safety lever on the trigger. The earlier models had a flat spring and the later ones had the spring over the metal rod. This should make yours the Third Model Hammerless built from 1909 to 1941. Iver Johnson manufactured a fine, yet inexpensive, revolver. As such, there has been no collectability up to now, selling in the neighborhood of $75.00. I hope this answers your questions and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
