Question
Hi,
I have a Triplett & Scott Civil War carbine with a 30" barrel. It is in very good condition. All the markings are there but the serial number. It is not stamped where it is supposed to be located. All the other markings are very clear. Is there a reason why there is no serial number. I looked with a magnifying glass everywhere but found no numbers.
Thanks,
Answer
Hello Bob,
The Triplett & Scott carbine was made between 1864 and 1866.. Serial numbers were not common practise or even required by law until 1968. So this gun was made 100+ years before serial numbers were ever common practise. If any numbers were placed on a gun of that age it would have been placed by the army or other owners to identify which gun they had. I am going to guess that since most soilders in the civil war had to pick up the guns of their dead friends in order to have a gun, they probably didn't care to much for keeping track of who had what gun.
Best of luck, sounds like ya have a real interesting gun!
