Stevens 22 single shot model 15-A

 54 years ago, my father gave me a used Stevens Model 15-A for Christmas. That little gun got a LOT of use. Recently, I had it reblued and a walnut stock made for it. I am planning on giving it to my grandson. I was just curious. Is there any way to tell how old it is?

It is very hard to say since these guns were made between 1939 and 1971.  That is a pretty broad spread and serial numbers were not required on rifles until 1968, so there isn't much you can do to identify specific date of manufacture.  I do know that prior to 1948 the rifles had a 24" barrel and after 1948, they had a 22" barrel.  If you know the gun is at least 54 years old, that makes it at least 1956.  Check the barrel length and that might get you a little closer.  I think the closest you will most likely get is within 10 years, give or take.

I'd say that your grandson is pretty lucky to be getting it.  Make sure that your son understands the sentimental value.  They aren't really worth much in the way of cash...probably no more than $100 in the best condition.  It is worth way more from the standpoint of a family heirloom.
