Question
QUESTION: Dear Dave,
I am thinking about purchasing a gun. It's sole purpose would be self defense. I have always worried about someone breaking in and I'm left helpless. What gun would you recommend for maximum close-range stopping/dropping capability? I don't care about gun weight (I'm a weight lifter), size, maneuverability, or range, nor about cost. I don't want any chance of the individual getting up after the shot.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
ANSWER: The type of gun that I use and recommend when size and weight are not a problem is a 1911 style autoloader in caliber .45 ACP. These are made by many manufacturers, in many different price ranges from $400 to well over $2,000. Some are optimized for competition use, but you probably don't need that. I have several models from Auto Ordnance, and my carry gun is one from Armscor. You can stop by your local gun shop and check out different models. You should also try firing it a few times before buying it. Then you will need to practice regularly to ensure that you can operate it safely and effectively.
Hope this helps!

QUESTION: This is very helpful. If it's not too much trouble, could you send me a link or two of the gun you have in mind? I'm pretty new at all this.
Thanks very much for your time, Dave.
Best regards.
Answer
Here is a page for some more expensive ones, then a mid priced one, then a standard one that costs less:

There are many others. Look under 1911 .45ACP
