Question
Hi Mr. Gore,
My wife and I are looking into purchasing a handgun for the protection of our home and property. I am righthanded and my wife is lefthanded...what is your opinion regarding the best home handgun for fast, easy use for either one of us?
Thanks,
Marc
Answer
Depends on if you want revolver or auto. Both can be used in either hand, but both need to be shot and fired enough to become and stay proficient. The smallest auto I would get is .40 cal, I like the .45, a little more kick but much better round. The heavier the gun the less the kick and recoil, so if you get a light gun it will kick more, since it is for home, get a heavy gun so it will absorb recoil better, the longer the barrel the more accurate it will be, so if auto at least a 4 inch barrel, if revolver 4 or 6 inch barrel is better.
A revolver should be .357 round and that you can shoot plus P rounds for less recoil.
So lots of factors, I would go to gun store that lets you rent guns and try different one or have a buddy who has lots of guns let you shoot autos and revolvers so you can see what is more comfortable for you and wife, women tend to like revolvers, men tend to like autos, up to you guys.
I would also get a nice 12 gauge shotgun to keep loaded in the house as well. This is a great defense gun, very intimidating and you don't have to be that accurate. Pump or auto is good, but again lots of shooting so you both are comfortable with operations, loading, safety, handling.
