Question
First off, thank you for your time. I was wondering, Will .22 shorts work in any 22 caliber rifle or just a bolt action rifle? Thank You!
Answer
Hello Josh. Your Savage Model 64 functions on the 'blow back' system. This system requires a higher chamber pressure than a .22 short. You may be able to shoot a .22 short by placing it directly into the chamber. This, however, can be a danger if you don't get the bolt completely closed before firing ( you might even pinch your finger!). I recommend that this not be done. There are a few .22 caliber rifles chambered for .22 short, long, and long rifle. These will be stamped on the barrel. Remington's Model 552 is one. this does not mean all Remington's will work with .22 shorts. Case in point, the Remington Model 66 is marked .22 long rifle only. This action is also too powerful to be opened by the pressure of a .22 short. So, as regards the 'blow back system', it all comes down to the pressure delivered by the powder charge of the cartridge used.
I hope this answers your question and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
