Question
I have a Model 11 shot gun with the safety infront of the trigger. Serial # 249374. On the barrel is Remington Arms-Union Metalic Cartridge CO Remington Works, Ilion.N.Y. USA. Just below that it reads Browning Patents Oct. 9,1900, Dec.17, 1901 Sept. 20 1902, June 16, 1903. Can you tell me from this info when this gun was made and where? Also is it worth much? Thanks Stan
Answer
Stan,
Thanks for your question. There is usually a date code stamp on the barrel. It would be a series of 2-3 letters. That would give the month and year of manufacture for most of the Model 11 shotguns. Based on what you have provided, I would put the manufacture date in 1922 or 1923, probably late 1922.
The Remington model 11 semi-auto shotgun was licensed by John Browning & introduced in 1905. It was made in 12 ga 2 3/4"only. It was practically identical with the then current Browning Auto 5 & shared some parts interchangeability. It was to become also known as the square sterned or humpback model by some. It held 4 rounds in the magazine
As far as where it was made, you already have that info. It was made in the Remington Arms factory in Ilion, NY. Browning also had this design produced in Belgium from 1902 to 1905. In 1905 he also made an agreement with Remington to produce them in the US.
As far as value, the condition of the shotgun has a lot to do with that. Grading evaluate how much of the original finish is still in place on both the wood and the blued portions of the gun, whether or not it is still in good working condition is also important. This was a very popular shotgun, so it is not especially rare. Values range from about $175 in 80% condition to around $300 for 98% condition (which would be very rare...)
Hope this help you out...
