NR Davis and Sons Shotgun

Question
I have my grandfathers' shotgun. I cannot find any identifying marks except for the N.R. Davis & Sons on both sides. If there was a serial number, where were they normally located? The metal rib that runs down the length of the barrels on top of the barrels has partially separated from the barrels. I live in SW Georgia; do you know of anyone near here that could/would work on this gun for me. I have no intentions of selling it but since it was my grandfathers'; I would like to get it fixed but will it lessen the value later if I get it fixed? Thanks.
Answer
Hi,
Your gun was made between 1883 to 1917‑ N.R. DAVIS & SONS CO.‑ Water St., Assonet, MA,
Remove the fore stock and you should find a serial number. (not required to have a serial number could have none) Davis guns are well made utility guns. Most models are only worth $100 to $475 depending on condition. Some those with Damascus steel barrels are unsafe to shoot with modern ammo. Repairing it not have much effect on its value.
(Davis Special and Davis "B" Manga Steel are worth $250 to $925)
Step is determine which model you have. Most gun dealers can id it for you.
I do not know of Gunsmiths in your area. I would ask around at local gun dealers and gun clubs for a references on local gunsmiths.
