Dating Iver Johnson Champion Series 16Ga Shotgun

Question
I recently inherited a 16Ga Iver Johnson Champion Series shotgun when my step father passed. I don't believe that the gun has any real monetary value but it does have considerable sentimental value. It is in very god condition and I hope to pass it on to a nephew someday as an heirloom from his Grandfather. I would very much like to be able to accurately determine the date of manufacture as I feel the information would add to the "mystique" of owning Grandpa's gun.
This particular shotgun does not have a true serial number. The three letter code "C C G" appears stamped on the trigger guard and inside the fore stock (and perhaps elsewhere?). Also, etched on the underside of the barrel, concealed by the fore stock, are a series of numbers: 295-22-2851. Based on my own research, I believe that theses markings may represent the initials and social security number of the craftsman that assembled the weapon. Any information that you can provide will be sincerely appreciated and will add to our enjoyment of this heirloom.
Thank you in advance,
Rodney
Answer
Hello Rodney. Your Iver Johnson Champion shotgun was manufactured from 1909- 1956. Very few changes were made to it's construction during that time, so it does make dating it difficult. It will be up to you to gather as many historical bits to place a date on it. The "CCG" may be a previous owners initials and the etched numbers do seem to be a social security number. These guns, however, were produced into the 6 digits and sold for around $12.00. There may also be a number stamped under the butt-plate. Be careful when taking it off, so as not to break it. I hope this information helps you find your story. Thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
