Question
Pistol 48
Pistol 48
Charles,

I have a 6 shot double action H&R top break auto-ejecting revolver.  Not sure of caliber (.32 or .38).  Round barrel length = 3.25 inches.  Patent date Oct 4, 1887 on top of barrel. SN on frame inside left grip = 2399. Leaf spring. Black diamond grips with pistol target with 5 holes in target at top of grip. Nickel finish. Photo attached.

Can you identify the model and the year of manufacture please?

Thanks,

Answer
Hello Bill. Your H&R revolver is a 1st Model 2nd Variation dating 1890-1892. A six sot cylinder would be for .32 S&W cartridge. A 5 shot would be for a .38 S&W. Your's is definitely a .32 S&W. The serial number makes it closer to 1890 than to 1892. If there is no caliber markings on the left side of the barrel, it is for "blackpowder" cartridges, only! If, after having your revolver checked by a competent licensed gunsmith, you want to shoot it, there is ammo available. This ammunition is not available through regular ammunition dealers. It 'MUST' say 'BLACKPOWDER CARTRIDGES' on the package. These can be found on the Internet. I believe one could be Old Western Scrounger. I am not sure of their web site, but you can just google for 'blackpowder cartridges for sale' and you will find what you need. Thank you for asking for my assistance, Charles Gage
