Question
I inherited my father's collection recently and I was trying to find out what the choke was for this 20 gauge. I wasn't sure if I could shoot slugs through it or not. It doesn't say what the choke is. It's in good condition for it's age and it was deemed the groundhog gun, when I was a kid. My dad loved picking off the groundhogs in the garden. If you have an exact answer for me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Answer
Hello Ron. From my observation, rifled slugs can be fired through any choke. The choke on your gun is most likely Full, but you can have it measured by a competent licensed gunsmith. I prefer the Full choke for accuracy. Now, let me tell you a little about your shotgun. First, it is over 60 years old, being manufactured between 1936 and 1945. It was manufactured as a low-priced, but serviceable, shotgun. It was chambered for 2 3/4" shotgun shells only. If there are any cracks around the receiver, I advise against shooting any high power ammunition in it, especially slugs. You ask for an 'exact answer'. The only exact answer I can give, without examining your gun, is to take it to a competent licensed gunsmith and have him do the examination. If he approves it, shoot only 2 3/4" lead slugs in it. I hope this answers your question and thank you very much for asking for me. Charles Gage
